诺丁山
威廉塞克（休.格兰特饰）住在伦敦西部的诺丁山，他已经离婚，和一位行为怪异，不修边幅的室友史派克住在一起，并在诺丁山的中心，拥有一家惨淡经营的旅游书店。
个平凡无奇的星期三，威廉忽然发现世界知名的电影明星安娜史考特（朱丽娅.罗伯茨饰）走进店里。威廉神情恍乎，跟着安娜走出书店，他在街角买了一杯橙汁，谁想一转身却正好撞上安娜，橙汁泼了安娜一身。威廉借机邀请安娜去他离此处不远的家里更衣，好莱坞最红的明星在临别时竟然亲了这个伦敦的书店主人...两人都明白说不清为什么会发生这种事。
从此，威廉一成不变的生活起了涟猗，在一次的电话联络里，安娜邀他去饭店喝茶，但是他挑的时候不对，他被拥在一堆采访安娜的记者里面。他最后只好假装成一位杂志记者，并在她的经纪人面前问安娜一部自己没看过的电影，但最后访问却很成功，安娜也答应和他约会，但是当晚威廉必须参加朋友的一个生日宴会。
接下来发生的事是每个男人的梦想——威廉挽着全世界最有名的女人的手，走进了朋友的大门，威廉度过了一个美好的夜晚。当他们并肩走过诺丁山的花园，回到了饭店，却发现安娜的男朋友从美国飞了过来，威廉只好带着一颗破碎的心逃了出来。
威廉渡过了一段失意的日子，半年之后，安娜为了逃开裸照风波，又来到了伦敦找威廉，在一个礼拜里，安娜与威廉同住，两人再次陷入爱河。早上醒来，二人还来不及回味一夜情的美好感受，却发现门口早已被记者包围。安娜认为定是威廉出卖了她，十分气愤。
随着时间的推移，误会也逐渐消散。安娜正在伦敦拍摄由亨利·詹姆斯的名作改编的电影，邀请威廉到拍摄现场来玩。与威廉重逢，安娜显得十分高兴。威廉偶然听说安娜要甩掉他，这次又轮到他愤然离去。后悔不已的安娜来到书店，却遭到了威廉的拒绝，但他很快就后悔了。
在安娜的新闻发布会上，威廉终于大声表白了自己对安娜的感情。不久，安娜发现他们有了自己的孩子……
